Local News | A cool day out! Fuentes del Algar
Fuentes del Algar- A cool way to spend a day!
Where can you go for a day out when the mercury threatens to keep climbing and the weatherman reports the "highest temperatures on record"?
Here at Jacaranda Spain, this is a question that we are often asked by our friends, clients and summer guests. There are so many beautiful sights to see and places to go, but, it has to be said, in temperatures of 38+ degrees, the best place to be is either by the pool, or in the shade. However, when the novelty of relaxing by the pool begins to wane, we have the perfect day out for you to keep in your "entertaining the summer visitors" bank.
The Fuentes del Algar.
15 km inland from Benidorm and 3km from the Spanish town of Callosa d´en Sarrià "Fuentes del Algar", aka, "Les Fonts de l´Algar" is a wet zone that is so beautiful and important environmentally, that it is under protection from the Valencian government. It is a 1.5km, meandering stretch of the river Algar. The limestone geology of the area has allowed the river to etch its way into the rocks. This has given rise to springs and deep pools, as well as some stunning waterfalls. The fuentes are also believed to have healing qualities.
The excellent news is that it is open to the public! All you need is a swimming costume and some "stone shoes" (you can buy a pair for 5 or 6 euros from the chinese bazaar- and they are also great for visiting the stunning, stoney beaches the Costa Blanca has to offer ( an old pair of trainers also do the job ).
The water is straight from the mountains so it is fresh, crystal clear and, most importantly, always cool. There are streams to paddle in, pools to swim in, deeper pools to dive into and waterfalls to stand under. It is literally for all ages and all swimming abilities. Make sure you pack a picnic ( alcohol is not allowed, which we think is reasonable!) although, there are some great restaurants and cafes nearby if you prefer to be waited on.
The Fuentes were closed during the "State of Alarm" and, at the present time, you must book online before you go. This is no bad thing as the queues are known to be a half a kilometre long! The best time to go, to avoid crowds, is early, although the time slots are all day and its open until 8. Admission is;4 euros for adults, 2 euros for kids, free for disabled people and special rates for retirees and students. Book your tickets at Las Fuentes Del Algar
All of the team at Jacaranda Spain, love visiting the Fonts. It is refreshing, fun and even better, it showcases this beautiful part of Spain. Please respect it as we do, dispose of your litter reponsibly and help preserve these wonderful, natural springs.
