Almond Blossom, sent to teach us, that the Spring days soon will reach us” Almond Blossom by Edwin Arnold

The Jalon Valley has some of the most beautiful countryside in the whole of Spain. Hardly surprising then, that the area is very popular with walkers. With a great variety of hiking routes you can choose anything from a leisurely stroll through the vineyards or a 6 hour hike around the stunning Bernia mountain.

“We have done this walk several times and it just gets better every time.”

Although the winter months can be cold the sun shines most days and there is always something special to see. Its important to wear layers if you venture out because although early morning can see temperatures below zero, by afternoon it can get up to the 20 degree mark.

Whether you are a casual walker or a serious hiker, a walk at this time of year promises to be an unforgettable experience. January and February is the time of the Almond Blossom. The valley is awash with pink and white blossom and the delicate scent that it brings.

“Life is so beautiful this time of year”

Spain is the second biggest producer of almonds in the world. Producing 260,000 tonnes a year for export all over Europe. No surprise then, that they are often found in Spanish cooking recipes, sweet and savoury.

The almond blossom walks attract thousands of walkers every winter. Good walking shoes and a back pack, loaded with lunch, as well as a good camera are all you need. You don´t have to be a professional photographer to bag yourself an outstanding print to adorn your wall at home. Every home, restaurant, bar etc in the valley has at least one stunning shot of the almond groves in all their glory.

Artists through time have paid homage to this stunning bloom, indeed it is one of Van Gogh´s finest works. https://www.vangoghmuseum.nl/en/collection/s0176V1962

It is a spectacle not to be missed. The tourist office in Jalón
http://en.valldepop.es/ can give you all the walking routes in the valley, including the almond blossom route. However, if you would rather spend a more leisurely day enjoying this wondrous sight. Hop in the car and drive round the country caminos. Stop now and then to take it in and capture it. Then pass an hour or two in a village plaza with a copa de vino and some tapas.

We are here every year at the same time
