Property News | Buy a traditional Spanish Townhouse and live the Spanish lifestyle!
Buy a Traditional Townhouse and a place in a Spanish community.
Here at Jacaranda Spain we sell properties of all descriptions; Luxury villas, country fincas, coastal apartments, modern and traditional townhouses, and the list goes on. Of course when you start your search for a dream home in Spain you will have a good idea of what type of home you would like. Perhaps a stunning villa with incredible views of the coutryside? Or a coastal property with the Mediterranean sea as a backdrop? Or a modern apartment with everything on your doorstep? Whatever your wish list, we have the perfect property for you!
One type of property that is becoming more popular these days is the traditional Spanish townhouse. People who are looking to relocate to Spain often imagine a villa with its own swimming pool etc, but we would urge you to consider every option, weigh up the pro´s and con´s and open your mind to something different.

Our 7 top reasons why you should consider a traditional townhouse when looking for a Spanish property:
- Value for money- We put this at the top of the list because, at the present time, townhouses generally are affordable, especially for those who are willing to take on a project. There are so many stunning old townhouses crying out to be reformed. It may be you need only an “Obra Menor” licence (minor works) if you need to replace bathrooms or a kitchen, or you may need an “Obra Mayor” licence (major works) if the place needs to be completely renovated. Normally, the price reflects this. At Jacaranda Spain we can recommend architects and builders who will go with you and give you quotes to assess whether you are making a sound investment.
Location- Those who want to immerse themselves in a community and live a real Spanish lifestyle should seriously consider living in a village or town. Some of the pueblos in the Vall de Pop are incredibly pretty! Who wouldn´t want to sit at the foot of a historic church and watch the world go by with a morning coffee?
The Plaza Mayor in Jalón- A perfect spot to people watch!
- Convenience- It is a wonderful thing to be able to walk everwhere. We have clients who have owned country properties for years and then suddenly, they yearn to be able to walk to the bakers for fresh bread in the morning and maybe sit down and have a cafe con leche in the Plaza on their way home. Or to be able to go out for dinner and walk home afterwards. It is not always age related but for those who are advancing in years, it is a comfort to know getting around won´t be a problem and the older members of the community tend to look out for each other.
Space and Character- Unless you can afford a beautifully maintained country finca, rural properties and new modern villas rarely have traditional features and character. Most townhouses, however run down, have striking features, like original tiling and solid wood doors and windows, and they are almost always very spacious.

- Low maintenance- One of the top reasons foreign buyers are looking more at town houses these days. They make excellent holiday homes or “lock up and leave” second homes. There is very little maintenance needed.
- Security- Unfortunately, country properties and villas out of town are sometimes targeted by thieves. Not so much in the Vall de Pop, but in coastal areas it can be a real risk or an extra expense to have security systems in place. If you walk around villages in the Vall de Pop you will notice townhouses with their outer doors left open all day. The community look after each other and although they respect each others privacy, they have their own form of “neighbourhood watch”.
- Sense of Community- If you live in a town or village, you will be registered with the Town Hall (Ayuntamiento) and added to their mailing list. You will receive regular emails which will keep you informed of social events and meetings you may want to attend. Subjects such as; when the ecopark opening times are, the dates for the fiestas, Spanish classes (some townhalls offer free lessons to expats to improve your language skills), fairs and art exhibitions and talks by the “Policia Local” about home security. The local people here in spain are incredibly welcoming and will go out of their way to make you feel at home, even if you don´t speak Spanish. It is a wonderful thing to join in some of the events and support your town.
At Jacaranda Spain, we receive enquiries about our townhouses more often these days. Buyers are more savvy in todays market and they know that a permanent home in Spain is about more than just a decent view and a swimming pool. The dream villa with luxury outside living can become like a “ball and chain”; when you start to feel isolated, when home and pool maintenance costs have to be met, security starts to worry you, huge gardens become unmanageable, when you just want to downsize and have everything at a stones throw, etc. We think a townhouse and village life is worth some serious consideration.
