Local News | Mercat de la Terra- A very enjoyable way to support local farmers and artisan products!
Mercat de la Terra- The Earth Market- Supporting your local community.
Those lucky enough to live in the beautiful Vall de Pop, aka the Jalón Valley, will be familiar with the famous Saturday “Rastro”. This is a flea market which is set up every week along the river bank in the town of Jalón/Xaló. The stall holders sell mostly antiques, bric-a-brac, second hand clothes and jewelry.
The “Mercat de la Terra” has, in recent years, also become a permanent fixture in the town.

This excellent, ecological initiative, was developed by local farmers and artisan producers to showcase local agriculture and crafts. There are stalls that sell locally made honey, olive oils, jams, sweets, fruit and vegetables, cheeses and meat products as well as wine from the local bodegas. There are also stalls selling handicraft items, wood, clay and wicker products.

The Mercat is more than just a place to buy local produce however. There are regular workshops to demonstrate the manufacture and craftwork of the goods. It is all about promoting environmentally sustainable business.

The market was originally a monthly fixture and started in the central plaza in the town. It was so popular, it gained a weekly fixture and a permanent market place site!

There are lots of things to interest the kids. From storytelling and music to more “hands on” activities! The local farmers support the market to help educate the future generation and raise awareness of the old methods of production.

There are tables and chairs so that you can relax with a cold drink after you peruse the stalls, with live music to entertain you.

Here at Jacaranda Spain, we always encourage our friends and clients to integrate and support the local community. The Mercat de la Terra is a brilliant way to do that. The produce you buy here is mostly organic, pesticide free, seasonally fresh and environmentally sustainable. By buying at the market you are supporting local farmers and investing your money in the future of this beautiful Spanish pueblo.
"Llena tu cesta en el Mercat de la Terra Xaló" is the catchphrase for the market publicity. It means “FILL YOUR BASKET” at the Earth Market Jalón!
