Summer changes to Autumn!
The Costa Blanca North, our picturesque region of Spain’s Mediterranean coastline, is known for its diverse climate, which can vary significantly from one area to another due to the varied topography.
Nestled between mountain ranges and the sea, this area benefits from a pleasant year-round climate, characterised by warm summers and mild winters.
The Jalon Valley, a lush inland area dotted with vineyards, almond groves, and charming villages, offers a slightly cooler microclimate compared to the coastal towns.
Mediterranean climate
Generally, the Costa Blanca North enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with over 300 days of sunshine per year.
The summer months (June to August) are typically hot and dry, with temperatures often reaching the mid-30s Celsius along the coast. However, the inland areas like the Jalon Valley can experience slightly cooler nights due to their higher elevation.
In contrast, the winter months are mild, with temperatures rarely dropping below 10°C even in January. The area receives occasional rain, mostly concentrated in the autumn months of October and November. However, Costa Blanca North is notably drier than many other parts of Spain, with the mountainous terrain often protecting the region from more significant rainfall.
Here comes September!
September marks the transition from summer to autumn in the Costa Blanca North, making it one of the most pleasant times to visit the region. The weather in September is still warm, but the intense heat of July and August begins to subside, offering more comfortable conditions for outdoor activities and exploration.
Daytime temperatures in September typically range between 25°C and 30°C, although it can still reach up to 32°C on the hottest days, especially at the beginning of the month. Coastal areas like Denia, Javea, and Moraira often enjoy sea breezes that help moderate the heat, making the beaches particularly enjoyable. The Mediterranean Sea remains warm in September, with sea temperatures around 24°C, making it ideal for swimming and water sports.
Evenings and nights in September become more comfortable, with temperatures dropping to around 17°C to 20°C. This provides a pleasant respite from the daytime warmth and allows for alfresco dining and evening strolls.
And in the Jalon Valley...
The Jalon Valley, is situated about 20 kilometres inland from the coast and experiences similar daytime temperatures to the coastal areas in September but benefits from cooler evenings due to its higher altitude and more rural setting. During the day, temperatures in the valley can range between 26°C and 29°C, but nights are notably cooler, often dropping to around 15°C to 18°C. This cooler night-time temperature makes for refreshing mornings and comfortable sleep.
The valley is known for its agricultural landscape, with vineyards and almond trees dominating the scenery. September is an important month in the valley as it marks the beginning of the grape harvest. The weather during this time is generally stable, with plenty of sunshine, although there is a slight increase in the likelihood of rain towards the latter part of the month as autumn approaches.
In summary
September on the Costa Blanca North, and especially the Jalon Valley, offers warm days and cooler nights, perfect for those seeking a more temperate climate as summer begins to wane. With minimal rainfall and plenty of sunshine, it’s an ideal time to explore both the coastal and inland beauty of this captivating region.
