What to expect from your Spanish home this winter
It´s winter but not as we know it.
When the summer season has finished and all the holiday makers have gone back home it doesn’t mean it’s the end for the residents or those who have a holiday home in Spain. La Marina Alta with the endless beaches, quaint fishing ports and the inland valleys of Orba and Jalon has an array of activities for all the family to enjoy made possible by the milder temperatures. It is no wonder so many European buyers choose to spend their winters here. So what can you expect from La Marina Alta this winter?
La Marina Alta´s location and micro-climate makes it perfect for enjoying the winter sun. The area has around 330 days of sunshine a year and even the coldest months of February will receive, on average, only 4/5 days of rain. The temperatures while they may be cooler, remain an average of 15/18º through December and January and if you can find a sun trap it can feel like 25/28º.
The milder winters are welcome for most residents and the idea of being able to stroll along the many beaches, which are now tourist free, in a pair of shorts is surely a major draw. For the adventurous types, this slight drop in temperature makes activities like hiking or walking even more enjoyable. Routes like Benimaurell, Sierra de Bernia and the Montgo offer the most stunning views and draw thousands of walkers every year.
Most of the properties being built today in Spain offer a cool environment in the summer and retain the heat in the winter. Most residents heat their homes with wood burning stoves and open fires throughout the winter. There are many wood suppliers and once you have stocked up your log pile with an assortment of olive, orange and oak wood your winter fuel worries are over.
Most residents will boast that they only spend around 500 euros throughout the winter on fuel costs. Remember … You are still living outdoors for much of the day!
Off the beach and onto the slopes!
La Marina Alta has the beauty of the coastline and the inland areas but what about those that enjoy a holiday on the piste?
There are a multitude of beautiful ski resorts within a few hours drive. For one, the Sierra Nevada mountains with the neighbouring town of Granada. This is a stunning location to visit all year round but in the winter it is perfect to combine Sking and the city of Granada. It is home to the iconic Alhambra, a Moorish palace named by Lonely planet as one of the top ten ultimate travel destinations and it is on our doorstep.
Closer to home you have Javalambre Ski resort.
Just an hour and a half from Valencia and Zaragoza, this resort is located in the Sierra de Javalambre Mountains. It opened in 1995, thereby extending the skiing options available in the province of Teruel. Its modern snow production systems guarantee skiing throughout the winter season. Aramón Javalambre invests in the quality of its services so that winter sports enthusiasts can spend a few unforgettable days skiing. Nature lovers can enjoy the surrounding area by taking any of the panoramic hiking trails which take visitors all around the area surrounding the ski resort and offer outstanding views over the Javalambre mountain range.
Two and half hours drive Valdelinares Ski resort
Valdelinares is a very picturesque ski resort set in the pine-forested Sierra de Gúdar mountains and near to the major town of Teruel.
Valdelinares is only an hours drive inland from Valencia – the third largest city in Spain. It’s location means if you live on the northern Costa Blanca coast or on the southern Costa Azahar coast, then you can easily reach Valdelinares for a days skiing and be back home later that day.
Most residents here in Spain will tell you that the winter here in Spain is the best part of the year. Sometimes you have to wrap up warm and go home and light a roaring fire but as it lasts only a short few months they actually look forward to it. It’s no price to pay at all when your consolation is the glorious winter sunshine and clear blue skies and the most worrying thing about your day is where to enjoy your morning coffee!
